What is Mysore?

Mysore style classes are the traditional method for learning and practicing Ashtanga Yoga. Students learn at their own pace and are guided individually through a customized practice one pose at a time. The learning is progressive in nature and students build a personal practice over a period of time, gaining more independence as they are ready. No experience is needed to begin.

Mysore is a wonderful opportunity for individuals at different levels to experience the practice together. Because each person is doing their own practice, there is no need to speed up or slow down to meet the needs of a group class. If you have limitations or injuries, the instructor will provide individual instruction on how to approach the practice safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Can I Expect From My First Practice?

When you arrive the teacher will give you an overview of what to expect the first few weeks, ask about injuries and then show you where to put your mat. You can expect to stay about an hour for your first few classes.

The first sequence you will learn is Sun Salutation A. In this sequence you will begin to warm up your body and connect your breath and movement. The teacher will guide you several times. Once you feel comfortable with the sequence you will have some time to try it on your own with instruction as needed. You will finish your practice each time with three closing postures.

And Then What?

The next time you come you will be greeted by the same teacher and they review what you learned the previous visit. As you are able to move through the sequence confidently more postures will be added slowly gaining more independence with time.

You will build a yoga practice over time that is both sustainable and individualized for you. You will be able to modify your practice for illness, injury and other unexpected life circumstances. The possibilities for your practice are limitless.

Is Mysore Appropriate For Total Beginners?

Absolutely! Since we are working with you individually you don’t have to worry about keeping up with a class or deciphering complicated cues that don’t apply to you. We will provide you with your very own yoga practice.

Do I Need To Know The Sequence Before The Class?

Not at all! We will teach you everything you need to know from the very beginning.

What If I Have an Injury or Mobility Issue?

No problem. Just let the instructor know and you will work together to find a practice that meets you where you are.

Why Are Classes So Long

Mysore is an open practice time meaning each student can come (and go) whenever they need to as long as it’s within the scheduled hours. Practice times vary from 30 to 90 minutes. New students typically spend about an hour for their first few classes.

How Many Days Per Week Should I Practice?

Ideally, practicing five to six days per week is recommended, even at the beginning, taking only a few days off per week to allow the body to rest (traditionally, women rest for 3 days during menstruation). If possible, your practice should be at the same time every day. Although you may find that you are a little sore in the beginning, the regularity of a daily practice removes the soreness in the muscles and invigorates the body each day. If a daily commitment to the practice is not possible, many benefits can still be found practicing a few times a week. Please come to practice as you are able. All are welcome!

I'm Not Flexible, Can I Still Do Yoga?

Absolutely! Yoga is for all people. Increased flexibility in the body (and mind) is one of the benefits of a regular yoga practice. More mobility can lead to less pain and often has a big impact on how comfortable you feel in your body while moving through day to day tasks.

Will Everyone Be Watching Me?

Ashtanga is taught to be a meditative practice. Each practitioner is working to deepen their focus and their connection to their breath on their mat.
