Sruti Parampara: Invoking the foundational philosophy of Ashtanga Yoga through chanting.
No experience necessary!
Chanting is a traditional way of learning sacred knowledge. The methodology is simple: call and response. By listening and then repeating, the material is learned through vocalization, intonation, and sound. Discussion of the meaning comes second. It’s the opposite of memorization.
We’ll start with single words: the 8 limbs, the yamas and niyamas. Then we’ll venture into Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Chapter One. The first several sutras present the definition of yoga and the over-arching effect is has on us if we practice earnestly.
Anyone can benefit from a regular chanting practice. It helps to focus the mind, activate the parasympathetic nervous system, and inform how we may better activate the material in our lives both on and off the mat.
